Church of St. Jacques of Assyria: Free entry

The current building, which was rebuilt on the Les Boisses overhang when the original church was dynamited before the dam was impounded, retains the same characteristics as its ancestor. Come and see this Baroque church...from the 20th century!

Descriptif

The bell tower is a replica of the one that was rebuilt before the Revolution in the dip of the plateau, in the centre of the former village of Tignes.
All the furniture is, however, original: it was fortunate enough to be transferred into the new church ion Les Boisses before the former building was demolished, lending the late-20th century place of worship the ambiance of a church from Baroque times.
The vaulted ceiling of the chancel, supported by cruciform pillars, leads to the 18th-century main altarpiece. Its twisted columns, wreathed in rose branches, surround a painting by Jean-François Bérengier dating from 1768, depicting the Holy Family, surrounded by St. Maurice. St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Christopher. At the lower right, you can see the coats of arms of the sponsor families.
Its single register, punctuated by these columns, is divided into compartments and features niches that contain statues.
The 19th-century tabernacle, sober and almost a little stiff, stands in contrast with the exuberance of the upper part of the décor (the attic), which is an unabashed expression of the bountiful Baroque style.
The style of the Rosary altarpieces, devoted to the Virgin, and the altarpiece of St. Joseph enable the period of their execution to be dated to the beginning of the 18th century. The Stations of the Cross and the stained glass windows, on the other hand, were realised by modern artists. Thus, the unusual history of a vanished village and its community that were behind the creation of a modern resort shines through from the successive refurbishments of the harmonious interior of a church...timeless!
